Delilah Dirk and the King's Shilling - Tony Cliff

Delilah Dirk and the Blades of England lands Delilah and Selim right in the middle of yet more crazy adventures. A super kick-ass female protagonist, colourful and dynamic illustrations, and an energetic story, Delilah Dirk's newest adventure is not to be missed! I very much enjoyed Cliff's first book in the series, and this book not only matches the first, but actually exceeds it in complexity and character development. And even amidst all the action and fighting, there's not an excessive amount of blood, violence, or gore, which is often difficult to find in graphic novels these days.

In this instalment we get to see more of Delilah's backstory. We get to meet some of her family, find out some old secrets, and see her relationship with Mr. Selim develop and strengthen. There is intrigue, spying, lies, sword fighting, daring chases, sailing adventures, and lots of explosions. For action and adventure fans, this is a graphic novel not to be missed. For fans of books featuring strong, feminist themes, this is a text that you need to check out.


There's so much to love and enjoy in Delilah Dirk and the King's Shilling. I Highly Recommend it!

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm WAAAY behind on reviewing this title. But now that I've had a chance to get to some books that I want  to read as opposed to those that I have  to read, I had the chance to read this gorgeous book! The Living - Matt De La Peña

The Living  recently received an Honor from the Pura Belpré committee. The award recognizes of a work which best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth. As I was at the awards announcements, and having known people who served on the committee in the past, I was intrigued. I had read the winning title and the other honor titles, and was impressed with the choices. So here's my review of The Living : The novel begins with Shy, a young guy working for a snazzy cruise line, offering water to people on the Lido Deck of the ship to combat the heat. Everything is going pretty well until an older gentleman comes out and starts spouting of weird, disconcerting phrases: "You have seen the face of evil."Shy doesn't quite know what to think, so he moves on to a couple of ladies on the other side of the deck.
