Toys Meet Snow - Emily Jenkins (Author) & Paul O. Zelinsky (Illustrator)

Acclaimed author Emily Jenkins and Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Paul Zelinsky have created a book destined to become a classic. 

Children who have loved listening to the Toys trilogy, as well as those meeting the toys for the very first time, will be thrilled to see Lumphy, StingRay, and Plastic venture outdoors to play in the snow. Together the toys build a snowman, make snow angels, and, when day is done, head back inside their cozy house and wait for the return of the Little Girl.

There isn't too much to say about this book beyond the fact that it's engaging, whimsical, adorable, and absolutely beautifully constructed. Jenkins' words mix perfectly with Zelinsky's intricate illustrations. Lumphy, StingRay, and Plastic are fun characters, and their interactions with the outdoors now covered in snow will make children giggle and adults will appreciate the poetry of StingRay's attempts to understand the world. The snow in each illustration is deliciously soft and the images illicit feelings of both cold and comfort, knowing that the toys will eventually find their way back indoors.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm WAAAY behind on reviewing this title. But now that I've had a chance to get to some books that I want  to read as opposed to those that I have  to read, I had the chance to read this gorgeous book! The Living - Matt De La Peña

The Living  recently received an Honor from the Pura Belpré committee. The award recognizes of a work which best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth. As I was at the awards announcements, and having known people who served on the committee in the past, I was intrigued. I had read the winning title and the other honor titles, and was impressed with the choices. So here's my review of The Living : The novel begins with Shy, a young guy working for a snazzy cruise line, offering water to people on the Lido Deck of the ship to combat the heat. Everything is going pretty well until an older gentleman comes out and starts spouting of weird, disconcerting phrases: "You have seen the face of evil."Shy doesn't quite know what to think, so he moves on to a couple of ladies on the other side of the deck.
