Miss Hazeltine's Home for Shy and Fearful Cats - Alicia Potter & Birgitta Sif

I know it's early, BUT I really have almost nothing else to write reviews for right now! I hope you will all read this review, get excited, and eagerly await the book's release!

 Miss Hazeltine has plenty of kitty company, and she gives her beloved scaredy-cats lessons in everything from Bird Basics to How Not to Fear the Broom.

 The most timid of all is Crumb. He cowers in a corner. Miss Hazeltine doesn't mind. But when she gets in trouble and only Crumb knows where she is, will he find his inner courage and lead a daring rescue?

 Sounds fabulous, doesn't it? I mean, considering we live in an age when cat videos rule the interwebz and kitty memes have taken over Facebook, this book will likely find many audiences, from the very young to the much more... uh, mature! Potter and Sif's fabulous picturebook will entice children through its charming illustrations and engaging text. 

 Miss Hazeltine's is a book that will comfort the shy and the fearful, but without being overly didactic. Lessons may be learned, but young readers will also be able to simply enjoy the story and images without feeling that they are being taught. Potter examines the numerous things that people often find themselves being afraid of, and Sif illustrates the fearful felines in sympathetic and charming ways. Each cat is lovingly rendered, creating a cast of characters (with Crumb and Miss Hazeltine at the centre) that will entice the most cynical reader.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm WAAAY behind on reviewing this title. But now that I've had a chance to get to some books that I want  to read as opposed to those that I have  to read, I had the chance to read this gorgeous book! The Living - Matt De La Peña

The Living  recently received an Honor from the Pura Belpré committee. The award recognizes of a work which best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth. As I was at the awards announcements, and having known people who served on the committee in the past, I was intrigued. I had read the winning title and the other honor titles, and was impressed with the choices. So here's my review of The Living : The novel begins with Shy, a young guy working for a snazzy cruise line, offering water to people on the Lido Deck of the ship to combat the heat. Everything is going pretty well until an older gentleman comes out and starts spouting of weird, disconcerting phrases: "You have seen the face of evil."Shy doesn't quite know what to think, so he moves on to a couple of ladies on the other side of the deck.
